I found a Penny
just one among many
so little it’s told
from the kind that we fold
for some may cajole
a fortune foretold
what can I say but put it in play
perhaps in one’s time
something will stay
I can pitch it
pinch it
save it, press it
kiss it
shine it
buy a thought or
keep the doctor away . . Hmm
turn it for a pound
ante up foolish pretty and wise
find a stock-paid, parade an arcade
bank it with piggy
a loafer’s surprise!
But round up without it
to the miser’s chagrin
ner to see nine now or again
it could bring a buck
or a bit of good luck
but not really sure
I know where to begin
Just for a penny there’s work to be done
more dare it be said
than advance any fun
so it should be
quite easy to see
that even Midas would plea . . . “Just leave it be”
